Tenchi Masaki thought he was an ordinary Japanese High School student, who spends his summer vacations at his grandfather's Shinto shrine in rural Japan, until one day strange women started dropping into his life- literally. Since then he's flown to distant planets, defeated powerful villains, and even traveled through time. Has altering the course of history changed him? Not really, he's the same modest person, willing to accept life at face value, and ready to help those in need. The discovery that he has Jurai Royal blood only reinforces his desire to live a normal life. Too bad his peace keeps being interrupted by uninvited guests and all those women! His mother, Achika, died a few years after his birth, so Tenchi lives with his father, Nobuyuki.

OVA
In the OVA, Tenchi attended a different school than in the TV series. He attended a school in Tokyo until Ryoko destroyed it and then moved his house into rural Japan by his grandfather's shrine. He can also use the Wing of the Light Hawk to defeat the Space Pirate Kagato.

TV
In the TV series, Tenchi had always live at the Shrine and attended school there. He cannot produce the Light Hawk wings, and he defeats Yosho's brother Kagato.

Origins
Normally, only Jurai trees such as Tsunami can create Wings of the Light Hawk ("Ko-oh-yoku"). Tenchi can create wings without the trees' power, and can convert those wings into other forms, as he demonstrates in his battle against Kagato [OVA eps. 6].

Originally, when the series was named, "Tenchi Muyo" was chosen because "Tenchi" means "Heaven and Earth" and "Muyo" means "no need." Later it was discovered that these two words together also meant "this side up."
