  • Episode: 01
  • US Title: Separation Anxiety
  • Japanese Title: Cherry Blossoms, In a Paradise Where Flowers Bloom
  • Credits: Jody's Tenchi Page

Several acts of vandalism take place are various temples and shrines throughout Tokyo. A small child seems to be controlling them. Here name is Yugi (you don't know this yet) and she claims "I win." Many people report sightings of red orbs of light.

Ryo-oki performs her morning ritual of howling at the rising sun with a glossy look in her eyes. Sasami also enjoys the start of the day.

Ayeka has finished her song for her "beloved" (Tenchi) and sings it. To her surprise a bright red star appears in front of her and Washu walks out of it. Washu says that she has created an inter-dimensional gateway and brags about how much of a genius she is.

Sasami is downstairs and tries to wake everyone up. Everyone is already up except Tenchi and Ryoko. Ryoko stumbles out and asks for some water. Washu created the strongest liquor in the universe and Ryoko passed out after one swig. Sasami goes to Tenchi's room to wake him up, but he's not there.

Katsuhito is walking down the steps from the shrine and sees Tenchi standing in a tree looking out at the open scenery.

Sasami cooks breakfast for everyone at super speed. Katsuhito wonders why she does it every morning? Sasami says that she likes doing it and feels that it's the only way she can repay Katsuhito for letting them stay for free. Katsuhito is happy and says he has chosen Sasami to be Tenchi's bride. Sasami is ecstatic, but Ayeka is not pleased and yells at Katsuhito before realizing that she is saying things a loud. Katsuhito, was joking, of course.

Tenchi is on his way back to the house when two space ships appear out of nowhere. Mihoshi and Kiyone have returned and their entrance doesn't surprise anyone.

Katsuhito and Tenchi find out about the strange happenings in Tokyo and tells Tenchi that he won't press the issue, but Tenchi doesn't have to go if he doesn't want to. Tenchi says that he's made his decision and will tell everyone. Tenchi asks everyone to pose for a picture. Washu has created a "hologram camera" which uses a high output laser to take the picture. She demonstrates by taking a picture of one of the mountains. However, the laser destroys part of the mountain. They take the picture (complete with funny faces) and Tenchi announces that he is going to high school in Tokyo and will be gone for two years. Naturally, the girls are upset with the news.

Katsuhito explains that his friend in Tokyo, Dokuzen Tsuchida, will train Tenchi and that this will help Tenchi become a better priest for the shrine. He couldn't tell him "no," because Tsuchida's ancestors helped Katsuhito build the Masaki shrine. Nobuyuki is upset as well because Tenchi didn't talk with him about it. Sasami and Ryo-oki wonder why Tenchi has to go and not Nobuyuki? Ryo-oki transforms into her spaceship mode and drops Tenchi's father in the lake. Tenchi tells everyone that his mind is made up and he's going. Ayeka accepts the decision and tells Sasami that they've been nothing but a burden to him and this is a way that they can repay him.

Ryoko, still sleeping, says aloud "Tenchi, I love you!"

We are introduced to Sakuya Kumashiro. She is talking with friends at her school while Katsuhito and Tenchi try to make their way through Tokyo.

Tenchi and Katsuhito start unpacking Tenchi's belongings into his new apartment, but Tenchi feels that they should introduce themselves to the Tsuchida shrine.

Dokuzen says that he will make Tenchi a fine priest for the Masaki shrine. Tenchi thanks him and Katsuhito apologizes for the trouble. Dokuzen thinks nothing of it, but asks Katsuhito to do a a "purification ceremony" on some undeveloped land. Katsuhito tells Dokuzen that he will do it before he returns to Okayama.

Back at the house, Nobuyuki wonders what's for dinner, but Sasami is too bummed about Tenchi leaving so suddenly and will not cook for anyone. He notices that everyone else is eating instant ramen noodles and wants some. Mihoshi says that he can have one for 500 yen. Nobuyuki balks at the idea, but Washu doesn't care and buys one. Nobuyuki, realizing that this is the only way he can get food, digs for 500 yen, but Ryoko, still hung over, buys the last one.

Late at night, Tenchi is looking at the picture he took before leaving. Katsuhito tells him that they need to get some sleep. Tenchi places the picture on the desk and fades into crystals representing each person. Yugi looks at them and starts laughing.

During the purification ceremony, four spirits come to life and try to kill Tenchi and Katsuhito. Katsuhito shows off some of his power, but it doesn't effect the spirits. They start to run, but Katsuhito wishes they had brought Ayeka along.

Meanwhile, back at the house, Ryoko destroys everything when she finds out Tenchi has left and no one told her. She shakes up Nobuyuki, but he tells her that he's just as surprised as she was. Ryoko then turns her attention to Ayeka, but Ayeka tells her that it's her own fault for sleeping off a hangover. Ryoko then blames Washu for giving her the liquor and grabs her. Washu agrees to let them use her gateway to see him.

Tenchi and Katsuhito are backed up against a fence and the demons say they are going to kill the two. The inter-dimensional gateway opens and Ryoko flies out and grabs Tenchi. The other girls appear as well. Katsuhito tells them that the weak-looking monsters said that they were going to kill them. This doesn't sit will with the girls and they wipe the floor with the demons and destroy them. Afterwards. everyone leaves and Tenchi begins his new life. He is introduced to his new classmates including Sakuya Kumashiro. She instantly falls in love with Tenchi and the episode ends.
